What would it take for Israeli society to confront
what is being done in its name? The German and Czech experiences suggest that
information and time are not enough: a public reckoning has to be patiently
constructed.I attended a
second screening in Vienna of the film NAZA, the documentary
by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor examining how the Israeli military conducted
its campaign against Hamas in Gaza after 7 October 2023, and particularly how
the targeting decisions have resulted in large numbers of Palestinian civilian
casualties – the so-called collateral damage. Drawing on testimony from Israeli
soldiers and intelligence officers whose identities are concealed, the film
raises disturbing questions about the methods employed, the assessment of
civilian harm, and the responsibility of those authorizing attacks. This
screening was followed by a discussion with Ofer Waldman, head
of the Heinrich Böll Foundation’s Tel Aviv office. He was impressively humane
and decent, and his remarks opened questions I had not addressed in my first review. One
in particular stayed with me: what would turn the knowledge made available by a
film such as NAZA into a willingness among Israelis to confront their
responsibilities? Celý článek zde
